The patio chair that pinched
Outdoor furniture gets away with too much,, because people call it seasonal. A patio chair can rust, pinch, wobble, and everybody still says well it lives outside. That is not a defense. So do raccoons, and I do not let a raccoon bite my leg twice.
I fixed a folding chair that had been pinching the back of a lady’s leg when she sat down. She said it bit her twice. I said then it knows what it is doing. That was maybe too strong for a chair, but I had not seen the hinge yet.
The hinge was dry and a little bent. There was a spot where the frame closed with just enough gap to catch skin or fabric. It was not dramatic if you looked at it standing up. Sitting down is when the truth arrived. Furniture can hide its crimes until body weight enters the meeting.
She had a small patio with a table, two plants, and a wind chime that kept trying to comment. I opened and closed the chair several times and found the pinch point. She said she thought maybe she was sitting wrong. I said chairs do not get to blame the sitter that fast.
Had to oil the hinge, tighten the rivet area as much as a man can without owning a factory, and bend one little tab back where it belonged. I do not like bending patio metal because it remembers every insult. Go too far and now you have modern art with armrests.
She tested it carefully while I watched the hinge, not her leg, because that is where the information was. The chair opened, accepted weight, and did not bite. She said it felt safer. I said good,, outdoor furniture should not require trust exercises.
I told her to fold it dry before storing it and not leave it half-open all winter. Half-open is how chairs dream up bad geometry. She laughed, but I meant it. Bad geometry is behind more household pain than people admit.
I checked the other chair too because patio sets share bad habits. The second one was fine but dry, so I gave it a little oil before it got ideas. Preventing a pinch is better than repairing one after somebody has a mark on the back of her leg and starts distrusting furniture.
That chair made me think about how people forgive outdoor things too fast. If it is inside and it pinches, everybody agrees it is wrong. If it is outside, suddenly the chair gets weather as an alibi. I wrote NO WEATHER EXCUSE in my notes. A chair can live outside and still be expected to behave,, especially around bare legs and summer shorts.
When I left, the chair was folded by the wall and not making any faces at me. I looked back once from the driveway because patio furniture will behave while watched and then act up after supper. It stayed still. Good. A chair should support a person,, not make summer into a small TRAP with cushions.
