A kitchen drawer that kept coming out too far
A kitchen drawer should open enough to help you,, and not enough to join you. There is a difference. A drawer that comes all the way out into your hands has crossed from storage into surprise furniture, and I do not care for it.
I remembered that because my silverware drawer made a noise today like a possum stepping on foil. It did not come out. It only warned me. A warning is useful if you listen before forks are on the floor and everybody is looking at you like YOU invented gravity.
The client had a kitchen drawer that kept coming out too far and dropping in her hands. She said it scared her every time. I said that is because the drawer had learned there were no consequences. Furniture will keep misbehaving if nobody gives it a stop.
The stop was broken and one slide was bent from somebody pulling like they were starting a lawn mower. I do not know who. Nobody ever knows who pulled too hard. Houses have mystery people in them named Not Me and I Barely Touched It.
I had to empty the drawer first. Spatulas, measuring spoons, a pizza cutter, batteries for some reason, and one little corn cob holder that looked like it had seen violence. She said she should organize it. I said the drawer is not on trial today. The slide is.
Getting the new stop seated took longer than it should have because the back of the cabinet was tight and the screw wanted to start crooked. I had to hold pressure with one hand and start it slow with the other. Slow is not the same as unsure. Slow is how you keep from making a second repair inside the first repair.
When I put the drawer back, it opened and stopped where it was supposed to. She pulled it twice and laughed like it had told a joke. I said no joke,, just boundaries. Drawers need boundaries or the silverware starts traveling.
There was also a drawer liner in there that had bunched up in the back like a little rug. That matters because a bunched liner can make the drawer close wrong and then everyone blames the slide. I smoothed it out because if I leave one problem staring at another problem,, the room thinks I did not finish.
I wrote the drawer stop size in my notebook and later found a grocery list on the same page. That is why my notebooks are hard to explain. One line says 1/2 inch stop, next line says bananas maybe. But the job deserved a note because a drawer leaving the cabinet is a PANIC event disguised as kitchen storage.
I did not fix the batteries in the drawer because I did not know what they belonged to and loose batteries are a household mystery I try not to adopt. But I moved them to the side so they would not roll into the slide. A battery in a drawer track is how a 2 minute job becomes NONSENSE,, and I have seen enough.
