A garage pegboard that was holding secrets
A pegboard is not a wall,, no matter how many holes it has. People see all those holes and think the board is asking for every tool in the garage. It is not. It is asking for reasonable hooks and for someone to understand weight before hanging a hammer like a threat.
I saw a spare peg hook in my drawer today and that brought back a garage job where the whole board had bowed out in the middle. Not falling. Just leaning away from the studs like it wanted to leave the family. A pegboard can hold a lot of silence before it gives you a sign.
The woman said her late husband had put it up. I said then I will not insult it out loud. That is one of my rules. You can correct a dead man’s screws without making a speech about it. The board still needed help though. Respect does not hold a rake.
There were too few screws and the ones that were there were not finding anything useful behind the drywall. Too much weight, wrong hooks, one hammer hanging by faith and maybe paint. There were old extension cords looped through holes in a way I did not enjoy looking at. An extension cord can become a knot if you let it develop opinions.
I had to take everything down first. She kept saying sorry about the mess. I said a garage is not a church lobby. If it was clean I would be suspicious. We made piles by tool shape because that is the only way my head could keep the order from turning into soup.
Once the board was empty, the bow showed itself more honestly. I added backing where it should have had backing, got screws into real wood, and put the hooks back with some spacing. Not every hole needs a job. That is true of pegboard and people who volunteer too fast.
When the tools went back up, the board stayed flat. She said it looked better than before. I said it is still the same board,, it just quit lying about what it could carry. That is sometimes the whole repair.
I found two tools behind the bench that she said she had been looking for since before Thanksgiving. One was a scraper and one was a wrench with blue paint on it. Pegboards do not just hold tools,, they also create hiding places when the hooks get crowded and everything starts leaning forward like a bus line.
That job stayed with me because garages pretend to be storage but they are really memory rooms with oil spots. A person hangs one thing in the wrong place and 6 months later a rake is blocking the bike and nobody knows why. I told her the board was SOLID now, but only if the heavy stuff stayed low and the hooks quit acting brave.
Before I left, I took one bent hook with me because she said she did not want it and I did not want it going back up. A bent hook is an invitation to repeat history. I threw it in my scrap bin at home,, where bad hooks can think about what they did. That board had enough fresh chances without one crooked little saboteur.
